Hokkaido is a region in Japan blessed with abundant renewable energy resources such as wind, solar, and biomass. It is expected to attract Green Transformation (hereafter GX) industries by taking advantage of its rich energy potential.

While extreme weather, rising sea levels, and the destruction of ecosystems caused by climate change have had severe impacts, it is necessary to take action to achieve carbon neutrality.
Hokkaido University established the Knowledge GX Center as a holistic initiative and has made the promotion of green transformation a main pillar of its education and research in order to realize a sustainable and well-being society.

To fully harness Hokkaido’s abundant renewable energy and make it a global model for green transformation, close collaboration among local governments, industries, academia, and financial institutions is vital.

Achieving carbon neutrality requires technological breakthroughs, government policies such as the Feed-in Tariff (FIT), active investment, and continuous innovation.
The Green Transformation Innovation Center aims to bring together people working in technology, policy, and economics who are driving green transformation, providing a space for them to share ideas and collaborate.

Fortunately, Hokkaido University has many researchers working in the field of GX, and they have produced significant research outcomes.
Our center will enhance the excellence of GX research and accelerate its social implementation.

Time is ticking, and there is less and less time to achieve carbon neutrality, live in harmony with nature, and leave a sustainable and well-being society for future generations.
Our logo, inspired by an hourglass, expresses this sentiment.
We aim to share the message behind the logo widely and continue advancing GX.

Purpose

The GX Center aims to advance holistic science related to energy and the global environment in order to steadily realize a decarbonized, growth-oriented regional economy.
As an education and research center for GX, the Center promotes excellence in research, builds an industry–government–academia collaboration platform, and fosters the next generation of GX leaders.
Through these efforts, the Center contributes to mitigating climate change and achieving carbon neutrality, both of which are essential for building a sustainable society.

The GX Center promotes research excellence and contributes to regional revitalization.
